This 2-day training program is designed to enhance a utility locator’s understanding of their equipment and provide best locating practices. Training topics will include a general overview of utility locating, its history, devices used, and the science behind how they work. Students will learn the physical principles of electromagnetism and how certain factors can affect signal strength so that they can become more confident in their locating capabilities. We will also address differences in direct versus passive modes and appropriate ways to use both techniques. Additionally, this course will engage in discussion on how utility locators play one of the most important roles in the CGA, damage prevention, and the safety of work zones.
Requirements: Day 1 will be in-class lecture while Day 2 will be in-field training with equipment. Students are highly encouraged to bring their own utility locating devices as only a limited number of devices will be available to share. Lunch will be provided on both days, along with offsite transportation. Students will receive a certificate from the National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA) upon successful completion of the class, as well as access to the CGA Expo for the duration of Tuesday.
